Day 7, “shipping tomorrow.” Day 10, the parts arrived—and the hole alignment was off by 0.6 mm against our spec. Normal tolerance is ±0.2 mm.

The vendor claimed it was “within industry standard.” We rejected the batch. The redo cost us $22,000 in delayed assembly and emergency labor. That cheap bracket? Ended up costing twice as much as the premium vendor’s guaranteed service—and we lost a customer deadline.

The Tooling Example That Changed My Mind

I used to think rush pricing was a rip-off. Then we had an injection mold job that needed a steel insert—we had 10 business days, no buffer. The urgent CNC service charged 30% over standard.
